RACE-1 answering your crate engine and FASTRAK questions. This Q and A series will be updated more often with more answers to common questions…

In an effort to help FASTRAK competitors, we at RACE-1 have decided to start a “frequently asked questions” program. To help the racers better understand the FASTRAK rules and procedures, we will post some common questions that we have noticed are misunderstood, unclear or more complex issues. We will explain these issues and questions in simple terms for better understanding. Check out our FAQ page for some question that we will be answering in the future.

How are you able/allowed to build crate engines for the FASTRAK late models and also be the tech inspector? How does tech inspection work if an engine you built is in question?

The FASTRAK and GM rule books are black and white and very specific on what is and is NOT allowed.

Beyond that in the event of any type of protest or question as to the legality of one of my engines, I will NOT be the inspector of that engine. It will be completely inspected by either another FASTRAK authorized rebuilder or an independent engine builder who would be competent in the measurements involved to determine the ultimate legality of that engine.

As for the average weekly and Northeasten Touring tech inspection…
If a RACE-1 engine achieves a top 5 position where I am the tech inspector for the event, 1 of 2 things will happen, if the track’s tech inspector is on hand for the event he may be called upon to tech the RACE-1 engine and car
OR
I carry a sheet with the “normal” teched items in post race inspection, this sheet has some 40 different post race tech operations on it. I will hand the sheet to another competitor (within the top 5 finishers) and ask them to pick 3 items to be teched. Before the tech operations begins, the top 5 finisher will be shown (in the rule book) what the outcome must be to be legal.

I personally feel that an engine builder makes the absolute best tech inspector, simply from the knowledge and experience with the engines.

I understand the skepticism completely that is on many minds, but I also feel that the procedures that I have put into place should be an adequate check for the controversey at hand.

Can you explain the spoiler sides and the different sizes used for a 602?

The 602 crate engine will utilize a 12 inch tall side VS. the 8 inch side traditionally used for all FASTRAK cars.
The cars competing with a 604 engine will be using the exact same 8 inch tall templated spoiler side that FASTRAK has traditionally used.

The major problem with spoiler sides in the tech area are from a misunderstanding of how they are to be installed.

It is very common for the blade to be installed to far back on the car (deck).

The bottom of the blade is NOT to extend past the rear deck or quarter panel.

There also must be 2 1/2 inches between the front of the blade and the sail panel.

How is deck hight measured and which side of the car is it measured on? Also, when is the deck hight measured, before of after the feature?

Deck height is measured from the ground to the top of the rear deck at the CENTER of the car——–
this will be the average of left and right and will be the procedure used at all NE and Southern FASTRAK touring and national events.
We traditionally measure it during pre race inspection or in the line-up prior to an event.

Also, deck height will be measured AFTER qualifying. Measurement is with the driver in the car (MAX. 38″).
NOTE:
Certain tracks may enforce deck height dimensions in the post race inspection, and may use there own interpratation as to where the measurement will be taken, however all regional touring races in the N.E. and southern region will be an average as stated.
